Principal’s Message

Coen State School has seen a lot of transition over the past few years. There have been changes of principals’ with each one fully committed to literacy and numeracy outcomes. This has seen development of numerous external partnerships with our goal being to ensure a maximum number of students are achieving state averages within the next few years. MULTILIT (Making Up Lost Time In Literacy) (Macquarie University) has been implemented across all classes in partnerships with the Every Child Is Special Project from Cape York Partnerships. This is the first step in increasing the educational outcomes for the 100% Indigenous students attending our school. Coen State School is working hard to develop strong relationships between school staff and the community. With a moderate amount of transience among students and local families, a lot of work has been done to set expectations within the community of attendance at school and the importance of an education. With a growing value of education in the community, newly arrived families are aware of the school’s expectation and everyone in the community works together to ensure each new child is enrolled at the school and attending. Parents and caregivers are increasingly coming into the school to speak to staff about their child/ren’s progress and to participate in school activities.

A change of school and community culture towards education has seen the following over the past year:

  • (Re)introduction of a school uniform;
  • A stronger parental engagement in activities including Parent/Teacher evenings;
  • An end of year Education Awards evening, rewarding individual success in academic and attendance achievements;
  • Development of school infrastructure including new covered paths, new classroom/literacy centre and proposed landscaping of grounds;
  • Restructured classroom learning to focus on individual student needs.
With so much activity gaining momentum, Coen State School will only improve!
